November 4, 2017: Numerous Princes and government officials are rounded up and confined at a renovated Ritz Carlton in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Was this a stab at rooting out corruption, or a soft purge plotted by the wily Mohammed Bin Salman, Crown Prince and son of King Salman? The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia has been distinguished by its oil production and alliance with the United States, as well as its strict views on women’s rights and transition of power within the family. Questions over succession to the throne loomed large with each previous ruler’s passing. Mohammed became a formidable force as his father sought to attain the throne. After Salman became king in 2015, Mohammed’s power grew. Mohammed was quick to act, politicking and making his presence known in diplomatic circles. He was named Crown Prince in 2017. Mohammed sought investment capital for the kingdom; he wanted to modernize and reform the vast empire. However, any obstacles to his maneuverings were deposed, jailed, or allegedly executed, in the case of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The Crown Prince has been controversial, but his legacy is still to be cemented.

Blood and Oil hits the ground running at a frenetic pace with the 2017 arrests. The action and drama underpinning the desert kingdom and its denizens proves completely engrossing. The authors have done admirable work in their profile of Mohammed Bin Salman and his Machiavellian ways. A gripping biography & geopolitical narrative.
