Benjamin Franklin: You’ve Got Mail
Young Ike Saturday has the ultimate historical hookup, as his letters to Ben Franklin somehow travel back in time and reach the great statesman! But after accidentally altering the past and endangering our history, our mildly-obnoxious-but-well-meaning teenage hero risks everything to mail himself back in time and save Benjamin Franklin! Will Ike succeed? Will history survive?
Benjamin Franklin: You’ve Got Mail is an endearing mix of historical fiction and coming-of-age storytelling. Told in a series of letters from the points of view of Ike, Franklin, and Ike’s girlfriend, Claire, the format is engaging and keeps the story moving, but it makes the reader wish Claire had more to do.
That being said, there’s a lot to recommend about this book. It’s funny and tense all at once, a story about two generations colliding in unexpected ways and the importance of the bonds we build with others. Pretty ambitious for a time-travel romp.
But perhaps the best thing about this book is how it tackles the concept of hero worship. Ike and Ben have some wonderful interactions that feel entirely realistic, and it really saves the book from just being a bit of alternate-history wackiness.
