At the Edge of the Woods (A Lew Ferris Mystery)
At the Edge of the Woods is a murder mystery in Loon Lake, Wisconsin. Sheriff Lew Ferris investigates the murder of a dentist who is shot while playing pickleball with his lover. Bert Willoughby is well known in the town as a dentist but is a liar and a cheater. His wife Jane and daughter Katherine also fall into the unsavory character category. Ferris is somewhat of a rough-around-the-edges kind of gal but she gets the job done. As witnesses come forward, Lew puts the pieces of the puzzle together. Another character is murdered and then someone else is knocked out.
Although I enjoyed the story and the writing style of Author Victoria Houston, I found the killer’s motive to be rather weak. Things happened in the book that were unnecessary and I wasn’t sure why they happened. There were also parts of the book that droned on and were redundant such as the fact that there were two Robins in the story—the dentist’s assistant and the dentist’s lover.
Overall, this book was a good read but the ending was a bit messy and unrealistic.
