An Unkindness of Magicians
Kat Howard’s propulsive novel An Unkindness of Magicians uncovers the dark and complex world of magic. The Turning has begun once again, and the Houses in the Unseen World must prepare for battle to become the head House in New York City’s secretive magical society. Sydney, an unknown magician with exceptional abilities, agrees to represent Laurent in the tournament. Laurent, a magician born outside of the magical world, is determined to found a new house. His best friend, Grey, who was disinherited by his mother from the House of Prospero, wants to do the same. They will face well-established and powerful Houses that will stop at nothing for control. Meanwhile, Harper, a New Yorker who seeks to expose the truth about her best friend’s murder, follows her investigation into the Unseen World; her discoveries could lead to irreversible consequences for everyone.
The rules of the Unseen World are sometimes too convenient and are sometimes revealed with little or no explanation. However, Howard’s magical world is wonderfully vivid; the magic itself engages all the senses, making each spell feel tangible. The disturbing, thrilling, and lovely moments pulse with striking language, and the fast-paced story is polished with a bit of humor that helps keep the novel light and fun. This riveting book is perfect for readers who want to escape.
