Almost a Full Moon
The weather is getting colder, and the perfect solution is a big pot of warm, comforting soup and the company of friends from close by and far away. It may be cold and the middle of winter, but the warmth around this boy and his grandmother will help brighten the evening. Almost A Full Moon is a lovely picture book based on the song of the same name, written by Hawksley Workman. The words–the lyrics–are sparse, and the story is thin; readers who are familiar with the song will no doubt love seeing it given a new life like this, but other readers may find the book lacking in substance. Illustrations by Jensine Eckwall are the real star here, evoking the beauty of a cold winter afternoon, the warmth of a pot of homemade soup, and the love of diverse friendships. It’s a short story, but readers will no doubt discover new things in Eckwall’s pictures every time they page through the book. This book will be a lovely addition to a winter picture book library.
