Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland: Tove Jansson Edition
By now, almost everyone knows the story Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll. It is one of the most famous pieces of nonsense. Carroll’s book was first published in 1865 and has been republished in over 125 different languages. One such publication in 1966 from Sweden featured artwork from the world-famous artist Trove Jansson. Now 58 years later, Carroll’s nonsensical tale, along with Jansson’s illustrations, has been re-released for a whole new audience to enjoy.
I am a huge fan of Lewis Carroll’s works. His fantasy tales are one of the reasons I am an avid reader today. My love for the surreal worlds has developed into quite a collection of books, all featuring artwork from differing illustrators. But for some reason, Trove Jansson’s interpretation of Alice, Queen of Hearts, the Cheshire Cat, Mad Hatter, and the rest of the characters have escaped my bookshelves until now. Jansson’s artwork is simple yet elegant. The pages of this book feature a mix of colored and black-and-white works that complement the story perfectly. Fans and collectors of Lewis Carroll’s books will not go wrong with this reprinting.
