A Theory of Dreaming: Sequel to A Study in Drowning
Nothing’s been easy for Preston and Effy since they escaped the Fairy King and submitted their thesis. At least now Effy is at the literature college, where she has always dreamed of being. But the bells won’t stop ringing in Preston’s ears, bells that lead him to a fallen palace that may or may not be real. Meanwhile, Effy struggles, the war grows worse, and Preston must deal with an eccentric professor who demands that he help him in his search for a place that shouldn’t exist, a place Preston dreams about.
The world is confusing, I constantly mixed up the two countries and who was from where, but it’s also fascinating; their entire history is a myth that some people believe in, but others don’t, magic is real yet it must be proven to exist or else it’s not. Effy and Preston were a little bland; they followed the same character arc until about halfway through. The story is mostly about Preston, but Effy gets thrown to the side. I would have liked to see more of her. I loved the side characters; the two best friends are more or less the same, but I still really enjoyed them, and they brought a feeling of family to the story.
