A Secret About a Secret: A novel
A Secret about a Secret by Peter Spiegelman is a thriller that takes place at a mysterious corporation that does biotech work. The exact geographic location, or even country location of Onstrand Biologic, is never clear which adds to the mystery. A body has been discovered in a freezer, that of Allegra Stans, a researcher there. Hundreds of employees, some of whom live at the facility’s dorms, a former boarding school, are potential suspects. It is a huge facility. There is a dumbwaiter, as well, which is very fun. There are corporate secrets and relationship secrets. The detective at the heart of the story, Agent Myles, is a wonderful character. There is something familiar about him, as his humanity and curiosity are quite believable. He adds humor to an otherwise quite serious investigation. I found some of the prose and details to be a bit slow, but the plot itself was fast-paced. Each step of the investigation reveals further complications, in a way that works for the readers. I hope to see Myles again in the next novel.
