A Beautiful Voice
A Beautiful Voice by Robert Lane is a fast-paced thriller with just the right amount of character development, mystery, and murder to keep readers on the edge of their seat.
Jake Travis finds himself in the midst of a Mexican drug cartel’s family drama when he accepts an assignment to pick up a husband and wife pair, Alejandro and Martina Vizcaro, with his boat at a local safehouse in the middle of the night and keep them from harm. He’s surprised when the party of two becomes a party of five… the couple has brought along three young children and beg him to smuggle them into the country as well. Travis has no choice but to acquiesce.
“We are in danger you cannot dream of,” Martina warns. Three days later, Travis finds the pair shot dead in the house and the children missing. Determined to find the kids and keep them safe, Travis quickly finds himself in a world of mysterious demises, hit men, hidden identities, danger, and near certain death.
A photo of the infamous drug cartel reveals a shocking surprise: the lovely Martina is not Alejandro’s wife at all. She’s his daughter. The beautiful young woman had a fling with the cartel, resulting in his only son. Martina refused to marry the cartel and fled with her son, father, and two sisters. Did the cartel trick Travis and his team into smuggling his son into the country, or is he behind Martina’s murder and the children’s disappearance?
Lane masterfully brings his characters to life and beautifully intertwines multiple plots into one pleasing tale. Jake Travis is an honest, dedicated hero, balanced nicely by his fiancée, professor Kathleen Rowe. Murderous hitman Rafael Cherez and hitwoman Tina Welch keep things deadly. The dark storyline surrounding Drug Cartel Sergio Flores and his money-laundering minions add an element of danger. Multi-faceted characters full of intrigue and surprise keep things interesting. The heartbreaking story of Stephan Cole commences and closes the novel, bringing the story full circle and leaving readers with a satisfying experience.
Readers will enjoy the laid-back Florida lifestyle and setting in and around St. Petersburg. A Beautiful Voice is the sixth book in Lane’s Jake Travis book series. It’s great as a stand-alone novel or a joy to read if you’re already familiar with Lane’s cast of characters and Travis’ adventures. Thrilling and complicated with some great plot twists, this is a quick read you won’t forget.
Chris Hayden has been working at City Book Review since 2012, so that makes him the keeper of knowledge. He manages the office and book reviewers (all 200 of them!), which is no small feat. If you’re looking at the book reviews here, you’re seeing them because he sent the books out for review. Without him, this place would fall apart, because no one else in the office knows how to use the postage machine. Two words: job security.
