Anton Roman began selling books in 1851, but his legendary bookstore didn’t become Books Inc. until 1946. From then on, their history has been defined by their indie character as they fought and survived the expansion of huge national book companies. Today, they operate 11 stores in San Francisco, East Bay and the Peninsula, and have become the West’s oldest independent bookseller.

Adobe Books opened the doors to their 16th Street Mission District shop in 1989. Almost immediately, it became a haven for artists, musicians, writers, readers, thinkers and locals alike. In 2001, they began the Adobe Books Backroom Gallery to support local artists and in 2012, they moved all of that and their books over to 24th Street. Today, they’re still operating the gallery and still selling books, and in 2018 they hosted 159 public events at no charge to the artists, musicians, poets, writers and thinkers.
Alexander’s is centrally located in the heart of downtown San Francisco. Walking to our store is always a great option. We are a short walk from Union Square and the Moscone Convention Center (3 to 4 blocks) and just a half block off Market Street on Second Street. We are about a ten minute walk from the Embarcardaro waterfront, Chinatown, North Beach or AT&T ballpark, the home of the San Francisco Giants.
If you’re looking for a lot of books and a pleasant place to peruse them, seek no further. Alley Cat Books opened on 24th Street in the heart of the Mission in 2011, and has since supplied a book-hungry neighborhood with new, used, and remaindered books–in English and Spanish!
Aqus Cafe is the center of the Petaluma Downtown Warehouse District universe. The owner, John Crowley, is a true community builder and hosts weekly gatherings of all sorts at his comfortable but artsy and airy spot located at the edge of Foundry Wharf. The food is delicious and they know how to make an excellent cappuccino as well as properly poor a Guinness. Indoor and outdoor seating is available and the regular crowd is warm and welcoming.

Bird & Beckett Books and Records is a cozy shop in the Glen Park neighborhood where you can shop local authors and artists, participate in poetry open mics, hear live jazz every week, and learn more about The Bird & Beckett Cultural Legacy Project. This nonprofit organization presents, documents and archives the creative work of living writers and musicians in the Bay Area.
Perhaps the most stylish bookstore in the city, Black Bird Bookstore is nestled in the Outer Sunset. The bright and modern shop features custom, built-in shelving displaying carefully curated titles covering several genres and topics, and their focus is on quality of books over sheer quantity. Bluestockings is a volunteer-powered and collectively-owned radical bookstore, fair trade cafe, and activist center in the Lower East Side of Manhattan. We carry over 6,000 titles on topics such as feminism, queer and gender studies, global capitalism, climate & environment, political theory, police and prisons, race and black studies, radical education, plus many more! You can also find some good ‘ole smutty fiction, sci-fi, and poetry . We also carry magazines, zines, journals, alternative menstrual products and other oddly hard-to-find good things.

New releases and classic fiction, staff picks, cookbooks with an emphasis on local cuisine, and books on current events fill the store. Like the other two Book Passage locations in the Bay Area (in Corte Madera and Sausalito) the Ferry Building venue hosts author signings and literary events several evenings a week. Visitors have included Chelsea Clinton, George Saunders, Dave Eggers, and Nigella Lawson.
