As with so many rivers nationwide, the Anacostia has suffered serious environmental degradation over the years. But despite the neglect, this waterway remains magnificent in many ways, and Schlyer, a nature writer and photographer who won the National Outdoor Book Award, the Ansel Adams Award for Conservation Photography, and other accolades for Continental Divide, spent seven years photographing and researching the Anacostia for this beautiful and poignant tribute. Combining history and natural history with stunning images, Schlyer documents both our destructiveness and our efforts at restoration, working to foster a new relationship between us and this once-and-future natural treasure.
