The Dragon Stoorworm
The Dragon Stoorworm is a traditional Scottish tale of a dragon as large as Scotland who demands “just one delicious young person to eat every day, starting with the King’s daughter” in exchange for not eating their crops. The king offers his daughter in marriage to anyone who could free Scotland from the Dragon. After many potential suitors vow to slay the dragon, but never return from their quest, a gentle lad asks the king if he could talk with the princess. The lad and princess venture out after the dragon, and in a clever (very non-warrior-like way) slay the dragon. While the author uses fun phrases, like, “It was absolutely ginormous,” the author also leaves out huge sections of the story. The princess and lad meet one day, then the next they head out after the dragon. With no character development, no tension, and no setting up for things to happen, this reviewer thought she had accidently skipped a page. Then, this gentle lad gives the dragon one blow on the head and sends the dragon rocketing into the sky. This seems out of character and unbelievable. This reviewer is disappointed in this interpretation of the tale.
