When a woman arrives at 221B Baker Street, asking Holmes and Watson to solve the mystery of her missing son — a soldier who has been labeled a deserter — Holmes leaps at the opportunity. But as the duo dig deeper, they encounter resistance from unexpectedly high places, and Holmes is attacked in the street by a deadly assailant. Holmes and Watson have clearly stumbled into something much more sinister than they’d anticipated, but what does it all have to do with the missing soldier?

Set relatively early in the canon of Holmes and Watson — there’s no Mycroft yet, and Holmes is still developing his impressive mental library — Murder at Sorrow’s Crown is not a typical Holmes story, and it’s better for it. Here we have a Sherlock who must do research, rather than instantly knowing everything. Here is a Watson who is still adapting to his new friend’s idiosyncrasies. And here is a whopper of a case they might not quite be ready for.

These gambles pay off, making for one of the better additions to the Holmes canon in recent memory. Here’s hoping Savile and Greenberger have more tricks up their sleeve. (But don’t forget Watson’s trusty sidearm next time!)
