Patterns of the Wheel: Coloring Art Based on Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time

Fans of fantasy literature know the books will be filled intricate maps and rich symbols to help the reader along the way. With a whopping fifteen books in Robert Jordan’s series, there is much for illustrator Amy Romanczuk, officially-licensed Wheel of Time artist, to choose from for this adult coloring book. She has included forty line drawings — each facing a page with a quote from one of the books in the series that relates to the drawing. The drawings have to look of old Europe and are modeled on traditional Ukrainian folk art called pysansky, which is used to decorate Ukrainian Easter eggs. Most of the drawings are intricate, yet have a naivety about them that seems to fit the fantasy story line of the books. Many take the form of mandalas, but there are quite a few that represent things in the natural world — birds, leaves, horses, plants, cats, etc. — and a few are built around words. For fans of Robert Jordan’s expansive series, this will be a great addition to their collection, one that gives them the added fun of coloring it and making it their own.
