Emily, a girl from present-day Earth, grapples with the ramifications of being a modern-day girl in a pre-Renaissance society. Lessons in Etiquette is the second in a series of five books exploring Emily’s adventure on a faraway planet.

Emily is good friends with Princess Alassa, a spoiled, yet influential, ruler-to-be. Alassa must find a husband to rule with her, so Emily and Alassa traverse the kingdom, visiting different towns and picking up eligible princes along the way. In the previous book, Emily effects change in Alassa’s society, and in Lessons in Etiquette, the reader sees how those changes affect the populace at large. While Emily knows how England was brought out of the middle ages and into the Renaissance, the rest of the kingdom does not, and the traditions that bind Alassa’s society together begin to crack.

Emily and Alassa are strong female heroes, remaining composed in the face of danger and asserting themselves when necessary. The book speaks to those who wonder how much developed nations should interfere in the cultivation of a developing society. Lessons in Etiquette is a simple story with strong characters and big ideas.
