Therapy offers to be something special and worthwhile, something that you might not be able to find any other way. Significant others, family members, colleagues, and friends might have self-interest in mind when they provide you advice. A therapist can be a good friend, a cheerleader, and might provide you with better advice than you would get any other way. Therapists can also be a great sounding board for those who want to test out their ideas. There are those, though, who are not good therapists, and some have needs themselves.

How Does That Make You Feel? True Confessions From Both Sides of the Therapy Couch edited by Sherry Amatenstein might shake up the field and maybe hurt it. Not everybody can afford therapy and practitioners are not always perfect. Collected here are over thirty entries from both patients and therapists. All sorts of issues are brought up in these themed pieces. There are those who have lost loved ones, marriage and sex counseling, reactions to abuse…Amatenstein is a therapist herself, and her book is somber, plodding, but fascinating. Some therapists have had mental health issues themselves, but as told here by Amatenstein, therapy can be useful and can provide healing.
