Lorie Blake lost her family to the Civil War and typhoid fever. With no one left to care for her, she was sold to a brothel at the age of 15. Three years later, she hates life but feels powerless to change it. And then Angus steps into her life, recognizes Tennessee in her voice, and steals her away. Now, travelling northwest, Lorie’s life seems too good to be true. Two of the others quickly become like brothers, while the last, Sawyer, makes her heart feel things she never imagined were possible. But Lorie’s past may not be through with her yet; the brothel’s madam wants her back, and is willing to pay anything to get her.

Abbie Williams’s novel Heart of a Dove is the first in a new series taking place during a post-Civil War America, and readers will be left eagerly anticipating the next installment. Lorie is an interesting character, knowledgeable about the darker side of sexuality while at the same time keeping her mind closed to the horrible things she is forced to do, but also completely unaware of what real love can feel like. With a sweet romance, good natured camaraderie, and a very real element of danger, this book is hard to put down.
