When Caroline Dupré’s environmentally active husband is killed in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, she’s told it was an accident—the result of aggressive crowd control for an overly zealous mob at an environmental conference. Then she is asked to take over his former position in the U.S. at the environmental organization he founded. At first hesitant, she finally decides it is what the deceased would have wanted . . . until a phone call brings not only his death into question, but the deaths of several others. Dupré is convinced that her husband was targeted for a reason, if she can only figure out what it was. The widow quickly finds herself and her young son pursued by a ruthless security team hired to keep her quiet.

Author James North, whose resume includes U.S. Navy intelligence officer and political analyst, deftly constructs the brilliant, controversial plot, which hinges on the dangers of climate change and the political management of fossil fuel resources.

Deep Deception has all the elements for an intriguing thriller, especially with the insidious problem of global warming as a backdrop. Much of the story is told from the point of view of the bad guys, but, unfortunately, the numerous details (do we really care about all those highway numbers?) slow down the action, and the characters are under developed. However, the story is perfectly suited for the screen, more so than for paperback. Weapons are much more impressive in close-ups. Skilled casting would flesh out the characters, mix with a few explosions—and voilà. In other words: look for the movie.
