What would happen if all the gasoline in the world were suddenly rotten? It would start out as an inconvenience, with people stuck on the side of roads and highways, frustrated and unable to go anywhere. If you’re like Zonny and her friends, Carter and Tina, and you’re lucky enough to already be on your bike when the gas goes bad, you might think it doesn’t even affect you. Sure, you suddenly have less food because you’re giving it out to the poor, unfortunate families stranded on the highway, but, other than that, you may not worry about it. Yes, you have to be extra careful to make sure the stranded people don’t steal your bike, but your trip continues uninterrupted. That is, until you realize just how much food we import, how much we rely on gasoline for everything. And you see the anger of people–anger that is irrationally directed at cyclists. Zonny even finds the destroyed bike and dead body of a cyclist who was on the wrong side of that anger.

When Zonny and her friends arrive home in Portland, they find that things have to get worse before they get better. Everyone’s scrambling to buy farmland, even people who have no idea how to farm. A local school has even converted a soccer field to a farm. As far as national leadership goes, the president was on a trip to China, and Congress was in recess, with members spread across the country (Zonny mentions that biking across the country would take roughly five weeks). When Zonny’s sister, Camille, tells Zonny she knows where the gas rot began, they head out on their bicycles to investigate.

Dangerous Bicycle Mystery Quest isn’t a super fast-paced book, but I thought the speed was perfect for the story being told. I also enjoyed the time spent on Zonny’s personal relationships. The author took the time to really develop the characters, instead of just throwing them into their dangerous adventure. The dialogue seemed a little off at first, but I quickly got used to it and even enjoyed the different style. The book was unlike anything I’d ever read before.

I enjoyed reading Dangerous Bicycle Mystery Quest, and I’d definitely recommend it.
