An English Ghost Story
When the Naremore family discovers the Hollow, it seems like an idyllic home, perfect for reforging frayed connections and rekindling love and affection all around. And for a while, it is, made more enchanting by the strange presences that seem to share the house with its new owners. But when old tensions reemerge and a veil of darkness falls over the Naremores, the Hollow may prove to be where everything falls to pieces.
An English Ghost Story is a haunting with an emotion-rich twist, employing the same confident, slow-burn pacing of novels like The Turn of the Screw, letting atmosphere more than anything dictate the reader’s experience.
But make no mistake, this is a horror story, and when things turn for the worse, they do so with alarming ferocity. Newman cleverly couches the darker turns within the characters themselves, letting the human elements — anger, self-loathing, desire for power, and sibling rivalry — enhance the darkness. The horrors feel more real because they’re based in all-too-real aspects of modern life any reader might find familiar.
While the gradual build and curious spin on the classic ghost story may be off-putting for some readers, I’m sure An English Ghost Story will charm (and unnerve) many others.
